If you’ve driven or walked past Macon City Hall lately, you’ve probably noticed the commotion —pardon our progress! Crews and heavy equipment are busy with not one, but two major projects right outside City Hall. Rosa Parks Square is well on its way to a full renovation, and the former City Hall parking lot is now almost unrecognizable, with towering pillars and a large crane at its center.
“This project transforms the former City Hall parking lot into more than 350 parking spaces that will support a new loft development, provide covered parking for City Hall employees, and offer more than 100 spaces for visitors coming Downtown,” explained Alex Morrison, Director of Planning and Public Spaces and Executive Director of the Urban Development Authority.
Phase 1 of the project includes a parking deck with 363 spaces for both Macon-Bibb County employees and the public. Phase 2 will bring 146 apartments along with new retail and office space.
“This project hits the triple bottom line for our community,” added Morrison. “It adds residences, grows the tax digest, and improves environmental sustainability.”
