Staff Spotlight: Carlene Howard

Every year before the Macon-Bibb County Fire Department’s Pink Pancake breakfast, we ask Carlene Howard what makes the pancakes pink, and she always responds, “fairy dust.” That must be her secret weapon because Carlene is known as the one who always steps up to help no matter what over at Fire Headquarters. That’s why we’re shining our Staff Spotlight her way this week.

Carlene is in year 13 of her career as an Administrative Assistant for the Fire Department. If you’ve ever called to ask a question, request a smoke alarm, or find out crucial information, it’s likely she’s the one who answered that call. She’s also the coordinator and overall organizer for the annual Pink Pancake Breakfast which takes place twice during the International Cherry Blossom Festival. From setting up the venue and buying the food and drinks, to coordinating the setup of the giant pancake grills, and calling current and retired firefighters to get them involved – Carlene makes sure it goes off without a hitch.

“The Fire Department is like a big family. We’re always here for each other no matter what’s going on. I may not see a specific firefighter but once a month, if at all, but I know I can pick up that phone and they’ll answer. Each of them knows they can call me too,” says Carlene. “I’m a people person, and part of what I love about my job is that I get to work a lot with the community. No two days here are the same, and I constantly meet new people, which I love! I’ve met so many wonderful people.”

Carlene may not be on a fire suppression team, but she puts out a different kind of fire. Chief Shane Edwards spoke from the heart about what Carlene means to the department, and the whole community.

“Carlene is that person that every organization needs one of. She’s one of a kind. She’s always stepped up to go above and beyond when no one else would,” said Chief Edwards. “She’s our primary connection to the community and there couldn’t be a more perfect person for that job. She takes care of so much in our office, but it’s not just the Chief and Assistant Chief she helps, it’s every single firefighter who might need anything. She’ll answer questions, find a solution to a problem, and come up with innovative ways to meet any need which might arise. She’s truly one of a kind and I can’t thank her enough for her passion and dedication to our community.

Join us in celebrating Carlene Howard! You can say thank you in person by coming out to the pink pancake breakfast this weekend and next! Click here for those details.
