Celebrating Minority Health Month

April 29, 2022

On Tuesday, April 26, Mayor Lester Miller presented Atrium Health Navicent, the Macon-Bibb County Health Department, Mercer University School of Medicine, and the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services Office of Minority Health with a proclamation to celebrate April 2022 as National Minority Health Month.

Georgia has the second-highest maternal mortality rate in the nation, and black women in Georgia are three times more likely to die from pregnancy-related complications than white women, according to the Centers for Disease Control.

Our local departments are working to educate the community about maternal health and racial disparities and inequities through a public discussion on May 3. They plan to discuss unconscious bias, the history of structural racism in health care, and addressing community solutions.
