Construction Code Adoption
Effective January 1, 2026
Macon-Bibb County will enforce the construction codes adopted by the State of Georgia for local municipalities within the state. These codes apply to ALL projects where the permit application is submitted on or after January 1, 2026. All permit applications submitted before January 1, 2026, will be governed by the previously adopted State of Georgia construction codes.
The following codes will be enforced by the Department of Building and Fire Safety for projects submitted for permitting after January 1, 2026:
- 2024 International Building Code (with Georgia Amendments)
- 2024 International Fire Code (with Georgia Amendments)
- 2024 International Fuel Gas Code (with Georgia Amendments)
- 2024 International Mechanical Code (with Georgia Amendments)
- 2024 International Plumbing Code (with Georgia Amendments)
- 2024 International Residential Code (with Georgia Amendments)
- 2024 International Swimming Pool and Spa Code (with Georgia Amendments)
- 2024 Life Safety Code (with Georgia Amendments)
- 2023 National Electrical Code (with Georgia Amendments)
- 2015 International Energy Conservation Code (with Georgia Amendments)
- 2012 International Wildland Urban Interface Code (with Georgia Amendments)
Transition Guidance
- Permit applications submitted before February 1, 2026, will be accepted and reviewed under the codes in effect at the time of submission.
- Project reviews already in progress will continue under the codes in effect when they were submitted.
- Beginning February 1, 2026, all new permit applications must comply with the newly adopted State building codes listed above.
- Commercial projects that have begun the permitting process or held pre-permit meetings, and all residential projects, may continue under the prior codes provided the permit application is submitted by January 31, 2026.
The above adopted codes have been amended by the State of Georgia. All projects submitted for permitting under these codes must comply with both the adopted codes and the adopted amendments. The amendments are available through the Georgia Department of Community Affairs and the Georgia State Fire Marshal for the amendments to the 2024 International Fire Code, the 2024 Life Safety Code, and the 2012 International Wildland Urban Interface Code.
