The Macon-Bibb Community Enhancement Authority (MBCCEA) will celebrate the first anniversary of the opening of the revitalized Booker T. Washington Center (401 Monroe Street) in the Historic Pleasant Hill Neighborhood. The Center had been closed for five years prior to this.
A community event will be held on Saturday, April 9 from 12:00 – 4:00 p.m. at the Center, and it will include demonstrations and information from organizations currently operating there, free food, games and prizes for kids, tours of the building, summer camp information and registration, and more.
“It’s been such a great year providing a variety of programs and services to children and adults that we want to take a moment to celebrate it all and take a look at what’s to come,” says MBCCEA Executive Director Tedra Huston.
Organizations currently providing programming and services at the Center include MBCCEA, C-Qul, Southern Center for Choice Theory, Pace Center for Girls, The Mosaic Development, Eric Foundation, and Melanated Communities Stimulation Project. The Booker T After Zone summer camp starts June 6 for children ages 13-17 with a cost of $100 for the entire summer. (There is financial assistance available.)
The Booker T. Washington Center officially reopened to serve the community on April 7, 2021, after undergoing a COST renovation and revitalization. The MBCEA manages the facility and helps identify organizations that will meet the needs of the community. Currently, NAMES OF ORGS offer services and programs there. Reopening the Center is just part of the work occurring to revitalize Historic Pleasant Hill. To improve the area in the vicinity of the Center, Macon-Bibb focused blight removal efforts on the streets near there, at the entrance to Historic Linwood Cemetery, and more.
