A Community Center built in the 1950’s in the Historic Pleasant Hill Neighborhood is restored and officially open to house multiple community organizations! On April 7, 2021, County Officials, the Community Enhancement Authority, and many partner agencies cut the ribbon on the Booker T. Washington Community Center on Monroe Street.

Mayor Lester Miller, State Representative James Beverly, Commissioner Virgil Watkins, representatives from the organizations that have offices in the building, and more spoke at the ceremony. Afterwards, the media and invited guests toured the building and learned more about the programs which will operate there.

“The Booker T. Washington Center will serve as a hub of community resources and programs that will greatly benefit the families in Historic Pleasant Hill and our entire community,” says Community Enhancement Authority Executive Director Tedra Huston.

“I’m very excited we’re able to help provide these greatly needed services, and I’m especially excited for the new Mental Health Matters initiative – which will be headquartered here – to begin its work in the next several weeks,” says Mayor Miller.

The Center will be home to the Southern Center for Choice Theory, C-Qul, Pace Center for Girls, Melanated Communities, the Eric Foundation, Mosaic Development, the Booker T Washington Reunion Committee, the Vexiom Group, and the Community Enhancement Authority. Additionally, AARP and Central Georgia Technical College will host regular programming. To learn more about the space, the programming, and how to be a part of the effort, click here.

Due to COVID-19 guidelines, this event will only be open to the media, elected officials, invited guests, and support staff. It will be broadcast live for the public at www.facebook.com/maconbibbcounty.
