Twenty-five years after the September 11 terrorist attacks, Macon-Bibb County will come together to remember the lives lost and honor the first responders who risked and gave their lives to save others.

The Macon-Bibb Law Enforcement Foundation will hold its annual 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Friday, September 11, at 8:45 a.m. at Public Safety Memorial Park, located at the corner of Mulberry and Second Streets in Downtown Macon.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the September 11, 2001 attacks, when nearly 3,000 people lost their lives in New York City, at the Pentagon, and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The annual ceremony provides an opportunity for the community to reflect on those lives, the bravery shown by first responders, and the lasting impact of that day.

“Twenty-five years later, we continue to remember the people whose lives were taken that day and the first responders who ran toward danger to help others,” says Warren Selby with the Macon-Bibb Law Enforcement Foundation. “It is important that we continue coming together as a community to honor their courage and sacrifice and make sure future generations understand why we will never forget.”

The ceremony will include a Presentation of Colors by the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office and Macon-Bibb County Fire Department Honor Guard. Representatives from the Fire Department and Sheriff’s Office will place roses on the memorial as a symbol of Macon-Bibb’s commitment to never forget the sacrifices made by those who serve their communities.

A wreath will also be placed at the memorial in remembrance of those who lost their lives on September 11 and in honor of the men and women who serve in public safety. Weather permitting, the Georgia State Patrol Aviation Division will conduct a flyover.

The community is invited to attend and join local public safety agencies in marking 25 years since a day that changed our nation forever, while ensuring the lives, courage, and sacrifices of September 11 are never forgotten.
