Macon-Bibb County’s new Fixed Base Operator (FBO) Executive Terminal is getting attention for more than its unique guitar-inspired design! Recently, trustees from the Georgia Forestry Association and Foundation visited the construction site at Middle Georgia Regional Airport to get a firsthand look at how Georgia-grown timber is being used to build the new facility.
The Georgia Forestry Association represents Georgia’s $42 billion forestry industry, including landowners, timber growers, manufacturers, and industry partners. Its Foundation focuses on workforce development, education, and sustainable forest management.
The group chose to visit Macon because the new FBO Executive Terminal is becoming a standout example of mass timber construction, an innovative building method that uses engineered wood products to create strong, durable structures.
What makes this project even more special? About 70% of the timber being used comes from Georgia!
“This project is special because it brings together so much of what makes Georgia and Macon unique,” says Aviation Director Doug Faour. “Not only are we building a beautiful, modern facility that reflects Macon’s musical history, but we’re also showcasing materials grown right here in Georgia. It’s exciting to see our airport become an example of how innovation and local resources can come together, and we’re proud to share that with leaders from across the state.”
The terminal features Southern Yellow Pine, primarily loblolly and slash pine, sourced from Georgia forests. Mass timber panels and glued-laminated (glulam) beams are being incorporated into the building’s structural system, roof, lobby, and other public spaces. The result will be a modern aviation facility that highlights both the strength and natural beauty of wood.
During the tour, trustees had the opportunity to see how timber is being incorporated alongside traditional construction materials like steel and concrete. They also learned about the design, engineering, and construction processes behind the project, as well as how Georgia’s forestry industry is helping bring it to life.
The project is particularly significant because mass timber construction is still relatively uncommon in aviation facilities. By incorporating Georgia-grown materials into a major infrastructure investment, Macon-Bibb County is demonstrating how regional communities can embrace innovative construction methods while supporting one of the state’s largest industries.
For Sheridan Construction, one of the partners helping bring the terminal to life, the project is also an investment in the community’s future.
“The Middle Georgia Regional Airport is an important gateway to our community and a key part of the region’s continued growth. We are proud to partner with Macon-Bibb County Government on a project that will serve our community, strengthen Middle Georgia, and create a welcoming first impression for those arriving here. For Sheridan, it’s especially meaningful to help build a project that will have a lasting impact in the community we call home,” says Christy Kovac, President & CEO of Sheridan Construction.
The new Executive Terminal, which celebrated its topping-out ceremony in August, is expected to be completed in May 2027. Its distinctive guitar-inspired design pays tribute to Macon’s rich musical heritage while creating a welcoming, modern space for travelers and visitors.
