On Thursday, June 18, fire recruits sat in the first two rows of a packed Rock Springs Baptist Church as they celebrated one of the biggest milestones of their lives. Twenty-five men and one woman officially became firefighters, surrounded by the family and friends who had supported them every step of the way.
“Today you transition from a recruit to a firefighter. While the Training Academy may be ending, your learning and your growth in this profession are only beginning,” Training Chief Arthur Parker told the new firefighters.
The Winter 2026 Recruit Class overcame every obstacle, passed rigorous training and certification exams, and proved they have what it takes to serve in a Class One Fire Department.
“I was sitting in that chair before when I was 18 years old,” said District 4 County Commissioner Joey Hulett, who once served with the Fire Department.
Following remarks from speakers, each recruit was pinned by a family member before taking the oath of office administered by Fire Chief Shane Edwards. Before the swearing-in, the audience also heard from Class Valedictorian Zachary J. Horton.
“Thank you to everyone who has given us a tidbit of knowledge, equipped us with the tools, and provided a strong foundation that we can build upon to become great firefighters,” Horton said. “I’m proud and honored to be part of this family.”
Horton’s journey to graduation made the moment even more meaningful. Originally part of an earlier recruit class, he was forced to step away after suffering an injury during training. Instead of giving up, he returned to the academy, completed the program, and earned the honor of valedictorian.
Before the ceremony concluded, Chief Edwards officially welcomed the graduates into the department while reminding them of the challenges—and support—that lie ahead.
“You’re going to see some bad things, things most people in this room will never see in their lifetime,” Chief Edwards said. “We put you through some of the hardest training we can because we know you’re prepared. I want you to know it’s okay not to be okay. You’re family now. We’re in this together.”
