Construction has officially started on renovations to Softball Field No. 7 in Carolyn Crayton Park. On Wednesday, February 18, Macon-Bibb County and the Macon-Bibb County Recreation Department held a Groundbreaking Ceremony to mark the start of renovations that will bring the field back into active use and up to tournament standards.
“A ballfield is more than just dirt and grass. It’s where kids learn teamwork, discipline, and confidence. It’s where friendships are built and memories are made,” said County Manager Dr. Keith Moffett. “Those lessons stay with them for life.”
The project was approved by the Macon-Bibb County Commission in December, clearing the way for upgrades that include new lighting, renovations, and repairs to the existing field. Once complete, Softball Field No. 7 will be able to host games and larger tournaments that are not currently possible.
“We have more than 50 requests for tournament every year,” said Recreation Director Robert Walker. “This is going the opportunity to deliver what the community asked for in a facility where we can host more tournaments here.”
“Improvements like these are vital because clients requests more facilities and fields in one location,” said Visit Macon President/CEO Gary Wheat. “More fields means more teams traveling to Macon.”
The nearly $1 million project, totaling $960,932, is funded through the 2018 Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST). Construction by Stafford Builders & Consultants, is expected to move quickly, bringing new energy and activity to Carolyn Crayton Park and strengthening Macon-Bibb County’s ability to host regional athletic events.
