On Tuesday, August 18, on behalf of Mayor Lester Miller, Dr. Henry Ficklin recognized the Macon-Bibb County Emergency Management Agency (EMA) and its work to keep the community safe with a proclamation in honor of National Emergency Management Awareness Month. National Emergency Management Awareness Month is recognized throughout August to highlight the important work emergency management professionals do every day. From preparing for severe weather and other emergencies to coordinating response and recovery efforts, EMA works year-round with local agencies, organizations, schools, businesses, and community partners to make sure Macon-Bibb County is ready when emergencies happen.

“National Emergency Management Awareness Month is an opportunity to shed light on what emergency management truly means for Macon-Bibb County,” says EMA Director Spencer Hawkins. “Behind the scenes, our job as public safety professionals are to serve as the connective tissue for our community; continuously analyzing risks, coordinating emergency response, and building strategies to safeguard life and property long before a disaster strikes.”

Throughout the month, Macon-Bibb County is highlighting the EMA team, its work in the community, and ways people can be better prepared for emergencies.

As part of those efforts, EMA is also hosting a free weather radio giveaway on Wednesday, August 26, from 5:00 until 8:00 p.m. at the Macon Mall. Weather radios will be available while supplies last. In an effort to make sure as many households as possible have a radio in it, anyone who received a free weather radio during the February giveaway will not be eligible to receive another radio at this event.
