In just two short months, StreetScan, a leader in infrastructure assessment technology, completed a detailed evaluation of 1,124.57 miles of paved roads owned and maintained by Macon-Bibb County. This assessment will help provide critical information about the roads to determine future repairs, maintenance, and improvements as part of its Paving the Way program.

“This work is especially important as we gear up for another SPLOST that will provide millions of dollars for repairs and improvements,” adds Mayor Miller. “We have an opportunity to make huge strides in the quality of our roads, and this assessment will provide us the roadmap to follow.”

StreetScan used advanced LiDAR technology, 360° imaging, and AI-powered analytics, to create a comprehensive digital map of Macon-Bibb’s road network. From here StreetScan will process the collected data to produce a pavement condition index (PCI) for each street, locations and types of distresses on each street (cracks, potholes, etc.), and 360 imagery for each street. This information is expected to be ready in the next 3-4 months.

“For too many years, a lack of funding meant our roads deteriorated faster than we could fix them,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “We have already put millions more into this work and begun catching up by focusing on our worst roads, but now we need to determine which are coming next.”

“With so many miles of paved roads to repair and maintain, it is crucial to public safety that those roads are evaluated and cataloged to determine which areas are in most need of repair,” said County Manager Dr. Keith Moffett. “Using this information, we will be able to combine general funds, state funds, and the SPLOST to make significant improvements.”
