The Washington Memorial Library is celebrating its 100th birthday! To celebrate, Mayor Lester Miller presented a proclamation to the library staff, declaring November 7, 2023 as Washington Memorial Library Centennial Day. You can read the proclamation here.
In 1916, Ellen Washington Bellamy donated $50,000 for the site on the corner of Washington Avenue and College Street, known as Washington Place, for the construction of a new library to be built in memory of her brother, Hugh Vernon Washington. On November 28, 1923, the Washington Memorial Library, designed by Nisbet and Dunwoody was opened to the public.
The library has gone through extensive renovations throughout the decades and grew. In 2017, the Library was named one of the most beautiful libraries in Georgia.
On Thursday, the Library held a birthday to celebrate with the community. Families enjoyed party games, live music, Pete the Cat mascot, reading to service dogs, and so much more!
