The Macon-Bibb County Recreation Department is hosting a Safety Around Water program in partnership with State Representative Tangie Herring (HD 145) and the YMCA of Metro Atlanta.

“We’re incredibly grateful to everyone for making this opportunity possible for families in Macon-Bibb County,” said Recreation Director Robert Walker. “Learning to swim and understanding water safety are life-saving skills, and we’re proud to help connect our children with a program that can make a lasting difference.”

The program will provide free water safety and swim lessons to 40 Macon-Bibb County children ages 6-12 from Monday, July 27, through Friday, July 31, at the South Bibb Recreation Center (7035 Houston Road). Sessions will take place daily from 9:00 until 11:00 a.m. Space is limited to 40 participants, and advance registration is required.

The nationally recognized YMCA Safety Around Water program teaches children essential water safety skills while helping them become more comfortable and confident in and around the water. Participants learn basic swimming techniques, how to respond in emergency situations, and other life-saving skills designed to reduce the risk of drowning.

“Every child deserves the opportunity to learn how to stay safe around water,” Rep. Herring said. “As a former educator, I’ve spent my career working to protect and support children both inside and outside the classroom. These free lessons can equip young people with skills that may one day save their lives, and I’m proud to partner with organizations that are making this opportunity available to families throughout Macon-Bibb County.”

The program is presented through a partnership among Amazon, Georgia Power, Macon-Bibb County Government, Representative Tangie Herring, Y Not Us, and the YMCA of Metro Atlanta. Thanks to the support of these community partners, the classes are offered free of charge to participating families. Parents and guardians are encouraged to register as soon as possible, as enrollment is limited to 40 children. Families can register online at: https://form.jotform.com/261655378838170
