We are celebrating our Recreation Department receiving an award from the Southern Section of the United States Tennis Association (USTA) for its efforts during National Tennis Month!
The department applied for funding and was chosen to receive $1,000 after its successful Tennis Month. This was its first year participating in the national initiative.
“They chose us because we hosted numerous monthlong activities targeting diverse community groups,” said Macon-Bibb County Tennis Coordinator Robin Bateman. “This compensation helped tremendously offset the cost of the items that were purchased for these events.”
Throughout the month of May, the department held the Tennis Jamboree, the library reading, the Adaptive Program, and our multi-generational play day.
“Tennis is a unique lifelong sport accessible to almost everyone, surpassing the boundaries of age, gender, and income level, and even mental and physical impairments, which makes it a perfect community sport,” said Bateman. “Players can reap a myriad of physical and psychological benefits when they pick up a racquet and hit the court.”
