Students in our community now can learn what goes into video production thanks to a new program offered by our Recreation Department.
The Teen Communications Program is based out of the Frank Johnson Recreation Center and is open to all students in 6th to 12th grades, even if they don’t have equipment or prior experience. They will be able to learn how to shoot and edit video, about the aesthetic elements of content creation, how to create content for different platforms, how to write scripts, about different layouts and planning, and more. They’re also learning about the gear involved in content creation, from cameras and microphones to software used for editing.
“We want to teach the younger generation about the newest technology and how to use it beyond just social media,” said Ja’Cory Bazell, Program Coordinator. “We’re not just teaching them cool tech things. We’re giving them real-life work experience that they can put on a resume before graduating high school.”
“This is definitely really good if I want to take this into a real career,” said Deandre McKinney. “I think it’s something that I’m going to be very thankful for later on.”
Students who are currently involved in the program have already had experience shooting, editing, and covering Southwest High School’s basketball games.
