StreetScan, a leader in infrastructure assessment technology, has officially started a detailed evaluation of roads throughout Macon-Bibb County. This assessment is aimed to provide critical information about the condition of nearly 1,200 miles of county-owned roads to determine future repairs, maintenance, and improvements as part of its Paving the Way program. Since the start date on December 26, StreetScan has completed 15% of the work so far, covering 174.5 out of 1,188 miles.

“For too many years, a lack of funding meant our roads deteriorated faster than we could fix them,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “We have already put millions more into this work and begun catching up by focusing on our worst roads, but now we need to determine which are coming next.”

“With so many miles of paved roads to repair and maintain, it is crucial to public safety that those roads are evaluated and cataloged to determine which areas are in most need of repair,” said County Manager Dr. Keith Moffett.

Using advanced LiDAR technology, 360° imaging, and AI-powered analytics, StreetScan will create a comprehensive digital map of Macon-Bibb’s road network. They will precisely identify defects such as cracks, bumps, and potholes, allowing the County to optimize its infrastructure planning and decision-making.

“This work is especially important as we gear up for another SPLOST that will provide millions of dollars for repairs and improvements,” adds Mayor Miller. “We have an opportunity to make huge strides in the quality of our roads, and this assessment will provide us the roadmap to follow.”

“This study will help us plan our roads program in a smarter, more effective way and allow us to more quickly address our worst roads and sections of roads,” says Dr. Moffett. “Using this map, we can combine general funds, state funds, and the SPLOST to make significant improvements.”

Once data collection is complete, StreetScan will provide a detailed inventory of road conditions rated on a scale from 0 to 100, with 0 representing the most severe condition and 100 the best. The results will be delivered through Streetlogix, a GIS-centric software that offers advanced visualization and analysis tools.
