On Saturday, April 25, a new community event will bring people together to raise awareness, promote inclusion, and celebrate individuals and families impacted by autism.
“Shining Together for Autism Awareness” is designed to create a positive and supportive space where people can learn more about autism, connect with others, and show unity across the community. The event will be held at Booker T. Washington Community Center (401 Monroe Street) from 11:00 a.m. until 2:00 p.m.
This event is being organized by community advocates Jonathan and Kimberly Barton, Macon Mental Health Matters (MMHM), and Bibb Mount Zion Church.
“We want this event to not only raise awareness but also bring people together in a way that is both educational and uplifting,” said Jonathan Barton. “Recognizing the need for greater understanding and support, we want to build an experience that benefits families and the broader community alike.”
The event will have a family-friendly atmosphere with activities, opportunities to engage with local resources, and interactive elements. It will also highlight stories and experiences from individuals and families impacted by autism, helping to build connection and understanding.
The event is free and open to the public.
“Shining Together” is designed for all members of the community, including families, individuals with autism, caregivers, educators, and anyone who wants to learn more and show support.
This marks the first Shining Together for Autism Awareness event, with hopes of growing it into an ongoing community tradition.
