The Public Works Department is holding its 2nd Annual Food Drive for the Middle Georgia Community Food Bank. Last year, the Department collected 4,169 items, and Director Marvin Land hopes they can surpass that this year.

“Our employees truly showed they cared for our community beyond what they do day in and day out all year long to provide services,” says Land. “With this and other outreach efforts, they go above and beyond to make our community a better place to live.”

From now until December 7, people are encouraged to donate: peanut butter, canned tuna, canned beans, canned soup, stews, pasta, 100% fruit juices, canned fruits and vegetables, macaroni, rice, cheese dinners, and low-sugar cereals (boxed).

Donations can be dropped off at the following offices:

  • Facilities Management (1000 Seventh Street)
  • Public Works (4520 Knight Road)
  • Parks and Beautification (327 Lower Poplar Street),
  • Solid Waste (327 Lower Poplar Street)
  • Tax Commissioner’s Office (188 Third Street)
  • Mayor’s Office (700 Poplar Street)

With their success of the first Food Drive, employees in Public Works asked if they could do other types of outreach, so an additional donation drive was held in the Spring of 2017 to benefit the Ronald McDonald House. The Departments held a friendly competition to see which could collect the most items, and 6,752 items, $50 worth of S&S Cafeteria gift cards, $250 in cash and checks, and 636 postage stamps were donated.
