When people think about local government, they often see the result, like paved roads, community programs, public safety investments, and neighborhood improvements. What they do not always see is the extensive planning, budgeting, and coordination happening behind the scenes to make it all possible.

In the latest podcast episode of “Macon It,” we sit down with Director of Budget & Grants Sherita Sims-Jones to talk about the work that goes into building the County’s annual budget and securing grants that help fund projects and services across the community.

The episode came out the same day Mayor Lester Miller proposed the FY27 budget during a presentation to the County Commission on Tuesday, May 18. During the conversation, Sims Jones gives viewers an inside look at the months-long process leading up to the proposed budget and explains how departments across the County work together to identify needs, priorities, and funding opportunities.

She also discusses the critical role grants play in supporting projects throughout Macon-Bibb, helping bring additional resources into the community while easing the burden on taxpayers.

From public safety and infrastructure improvements to recreation programs and neighborhood initiatives, Sims Jones explains how budgeting impacts nearly every service residents rely on daily.

“Sherita works tirelessly behind the scenes to make sure we are being responsible with taxpayer dollars while still finding ways to move our community forward,” said Mayor Miller. “The amount of work, detail, and coordination that goes into this process each year is incredible, and we are fortunate to have someone with her knowledge and commitment leading that effort.”

Throughout the episode, Sims Jones also shares what residents may not realize about the budget process and why transparency and accountability are so important when planning for the County’s future.
