World Hepatitis Day in Macon-Bibb County

Mayor Lester Miller and Dr. Henry Ficklin presented Atrium Health Navicent with a proclamation to recognize July 28, 2022, as World Hepatitis Day. 

2.4 million Americans are impacted by the hepatitis A virus, hepatitis B virus, and hepatitis C virus, which cause infection to the liver. In 2019, Georgia reported 844 cases of hepatitis A (significantly more than the national average) = 114 cases of hepatitis B, and 61 cases of hepatitis C. 

Hepatitis A and hepatitis B can be prevented and treated with immunizations and routine screening. Hepatitis C can be cured, and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends all individuals over the age of 18 and pregnant women be screened for hepatitis C.
