On Friday, May 31, Macon-Bibb County held a special ceremony to unveil a dedicated plaque at the Atrium Health Amphitheater. Commissioners, Urban Development Authority board members, Bicentennial Committee members, and many other community members joined Mayor Lester Miller in unveiling the plaque. You can watch the ceremony here.

“This is and will be something we will look back many years from now and smile at what we have…and today, we will unveil something that will help us remember this moment in time,” said Mayor Miller.

The plaque was made possible thanks to the Bicentennial Committee and Piedmont Construction. It is located near the West Gate entrance. The plaque has the names of each Commissioner and members of the UDA board and Executive Director Alex Morrison, who were instrumental in the process of building the Amphitheater. It also lists the name of each company and organization that played a role in the construction of the Amphitheater.

“Because of Macon-Bibb County and the Urban Development Authority, projects like this Amphitheater, like the pickleball facility, like moving government offices to stabilize and bring people back to this place,” said Morrison. “We’re already seeing equity restored into these neighborhoods and a spark of hope for small businesses and local people to make money again in the areas of Unionville, Bloomfield, West Macon, Cherokee Heights, and other places.”

After the unveiling, guests were invited to join in a group picture on the stage. They were also able to go behind the scenes of the amphitheater to learn how it was built, see how the backstage was designed for the artists, other special seating areas, and more.

“You have made this such a success,” Mayor Miller told the crowd and people watching on the livestream at home. “You are responsible for the economic growth we’re seeing in this area- you are bringing this area back to life. We can’t wait to see it continue to grow and grow with every show we bring.

The Atrium Health Amphitheater opened earlier this year, with its first show on March 24 being Lynyrd Skynyrd and ZZ Top. The 12,000-capacity venue has also had artists like Riley Green, Turnpike Troubadours, Anthony Hamilton, and more.
