Students from Montessori of Macon got an exclusive tour of Macon City Hall for their field trip on Tuesday. Upper elementary students (4th through 6th graders) started their morning by sitting in on a Committee of the Whole meeting. They got to see first-hand how important decisions are made in our County.
After the meeting, they made their way down to the Emergency Management Agency (EMA) bunker for a presentation from EMA Director Spencer Hawkins. Hawkins went over what EMA is responsible for and how the agency handles different emergencies. The students were very enthusiastic and had several questions for Hawkins – some of those relating to the existence of aliens.
“Yes, aliens exist,” Hawkins told the class. They giggled and asked more questions.
Once they toured the bunker and supply room, they went back into Commission Chambers to talk with Mayor Lester Miller. No questions were off limits.
“It’s always great to see kids want to learn more about how our government works,” said Mayor Miller. “These trips are important, and we are grateful Montessori of Macon chose coming here for their field trip.
The goal for the trip was to show students how a government works and what goes into making a County thrive.
