While many had the day off, dozens of people gathered at City Hall on Monday, January 17 to celebrate and honor Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Due to COVID-19 precautions and the weather, the event was moved to Commission Chambers and was live-streamed on our Facebook page. You can watch the full ceremony here.
“Let each of us continue to march in our hearts where we can’t with our feet,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “Let us march on with the dreams of our youth. I believe that Dr. King would be pleased if the march in our hearts were the hopes and dreams for a better world, a better America, a better Georgia, and a better Macon-Bibb County.”
Several speakers and musical performers took the podium that morning to pay tribute to Dr. King. Local clergy members also took the time to pray with everyone.
“We need to celebrate the life and the work of Dr. King, not just one day, not just the day of his birth or the day he was assassinated, but celebrate his works and ideas all year,” said MLK Board Chair and District 3 Commissioner Elaine Lucas. “We are committed to making sure all of our citizens remember all of the things that Dr. King stood for.”
The Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Board plans to celebrate Dr. King all year long. Visit www.MaconBibb.us/MLK for future events.
