On Halloween evening, Tuesday, October 31, Main Street Macon will host trick-or-treating in downtown Macon from 4pm to 7pm. Thirty businesses and organizations will open their doors to families with children and leashed pets in Macon’s Central Business District and pass out candy and dog treats.

“This is the first year Main Street Macon is coordinating trick-or-treating in our burgeoning downtown,” said Emily Hopkins, Main Street Macon Manager. “This is an opportunity to showcase Macon’s Central Business District as a place that is inclusive of families, dog-owners, and anyone who wants to explore our urban core. Downtown Macon is a safe environment filled with restaurants, retailers, and organizations that welcome the entire community to enjoy their many offerings.”

Several businesses will offer unique treats and activities during this event. The 567 Center for Renewal, a community space for entrepreneurs, artists, and musicians located on First Street, and Ocmulgee Brewpub on Second Street will offer free face painting for children. Comics Plus of Macon, a business that opened in the summer of 2017, will host a scavenger hunt with free comic books to promote literacy. Participants must visit all the businesses on the scavenger hunt and pick up a comic book. Comics Plus will give away prizes to those who complete the scavenger hunt, including six T-shirts from the Netflix hit series, Stranger Things, and donated items from downtown retailers. All participants who complete the scavenger hunt will be entered into a raffle with the opportunity to win a prize package from Comics Plus that includes a 6ft tall Stranger Things cut-out, posters, and more. The raffle will be drawn at 8pm.

“Scavenger hunts have the potential to attract and engage thousands of people,” said Will Peavy, owner of Comics Plus on Cherry Street. “That is where the strength of scavenger hunts lies, to let everyone know of all the wonderful aspects of a community that shops together and works together in downtown Macon!”

Additionally, Main Street Macon is partnering with the Downtown Macon Community Association (DMCA) to host a haunted alleyway in the alley that connects Poplar Street to Cherry Street. Cosplayers will pass out candy to children and there will be a band on Cherry Street for all downtown-goers to enjoy. This portion of the evening is made possible by a Downtown Challenge Grant from the Community Foundation of Central Georgia that DMCA won to activate Macon’s alleys.

“The Haunted Alley will be a family-friendly event in the alley beside the Rookery and the alley between The Lamar Lofts and Travis Jean,” said Scott Mitchell, incoming president of DMCA and manager of Travis Jean on Cherry Street. “Come out starting at 4pm for trick-or-treating, live music, fun, and games. There will be costumed characters in the alleyway including Tiana from Disney’s The Princess and the Frog, super heroes, and more!”
