The American Heart Association and Mayor Lester Miller designated February as American Heart Month in Macon-Bibb County with a proclamation read on February 4, and there’s a group of women raising awareness of this important issue. The groups present were: Women’s Missionary Society of the AME Church, Order of the Eastern Star, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority, Delta Sigma Theta Society, Zeta Phi Beta, Sigma Gamma Rho, Jack and Jill of America, The Links, and The International Association of Ministers’ Wives and Widows.

“We want to draw attention to heart health, especially among Black women. Heart Disease is one of the leading causes of death in Black women, and we thought that by forming a coalition, we could really strengthen the message and broaden that awareness,” says organizer Sylvia McGee with The Links Incorporated.
