The Deodar Cedar Tree that stood in front of the Macon-Bibb Government Center for more than 50 years came tumbling down when Tropical Storm Irma moved through our community on September 11, 2017. The tree held memories for many people who remember seeing it lit up every Christmas when they were children. Now, thanks to the Downtown Macon Rotary Club and the Macon-Bibb Parks and Beautification Department, a new tree stands tall and proud there! The original tree was donated in honor of Lieutenant James Wesley Bracken, who was killed in the Korean War in 1951. That tree was planted in 1960. Mr. Bracken’s family was present at the dedication of the new tree, and they say it’s a great honor to have this landmark standing there in his honor. The Downtown Macon Rotary Club purchased the tree as a way to help beautify our community.  There are plaques near the tree recognizing Lt. Bracken and the Rotary Club for their contribution.
