The International Cherry Blossom Festival may start March 18, but crews from Macon-Bibb County start weeks beforehand to get the city ready. You’ve probable already seen them around town or have noticed their work, like our Facilities Management Department painting the pink cherry blossoms on the streets and the pink line down the middle of Cherry Street and our Parks & Beautification Department hanging banners and lanterns downtown.

Other work you may not have seen being done but will certainly notice includes Recreation making sure lights work in Carolyn Crayton Park, Solid Waste getting trash cans set aside to place around the different events, the Sheriff’s Office preparing maps and plans for road closures, and Emergency Management beginning to monitor weather patterns and checking their equipment

“The Cherry Blossom Festival is a great time for our community to come together for 10 days of fun, and we get a chance to welcome others from all over the state and country,” says Mayor Lester Miller. “I know the Festival would not be as successful without their support before, during, and afterward, and I’m proud of the role they play in making our city a destination for great events.”

As the Festival gets closer and throughout the days it runs, crews will be helping block streets, keep the grass cut, replace lights, be on hand for public safety, filling water buffalos for road closures, and so much more.

“If you see our crews out getting ready or supporting the crowds during the Festival, take a moment and let them know how much they’re appreciated,” adds County Manager Dr. Keith Moffett. “These men and women work tirelessly behind the scenes to help create a great time for everyone.”
