On a cold and rainy Thursday morning, our Public Works crew started to remove a blighted structure, once known as the Norfolk Southern building.

“This abandoned structure no longer serves a purpose in our community, and we are making way for something everyone can enjoy,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “Clearing this blight will allow us to create safer parking for large events in Carolyn Crayton Park, as well as to improve the road and other infrastructure.”

More parking has been much needed for people who go to events at the park such as recreational sporting events and the International Cherry Blossom Festival.

“We are so grateful for Mayor Miller and his continued efforts to aid in the festival’s needs.  With the 50-75 thousand guests who come to Carolyn Crayton Park each March, parking is a key element in their positive experience,” said Cherry Blossom Festival President and CEO. “This new project creates another area for them to safely park and walk to the festival.”

The renovation project should be completed in the Spring.
