On Wednesday, July 12, more than 100 people braved the morning heat with smiles, as they celebrated the dedication of Carolyn Crayton Park, formerly known as Central City Park. Carolyn Crayton may have had the biggest smile of all as she sat front row listening to her friends and colleagues talk about how much she means to them and our community. “Mrs. Carolyn, I will tell you that being here this morning is positive proof of your vision and all of your hard work has paid off,” said General Robert McMahon. “Our community is a better place for it.”
Crayton is originally from Concord, North Carolina, but has called Macon home since 1970. In 1982 – as a way to celebrate her dear friend, William Fickling –she started the Cherry Blossom Festival, which is now known as the city’s largest annual festival and the Pinkest Party on Earth.
“Carolyn embraces everyone and makes everyone feel special,” said Liz Fabian. “She brought us all together from every race, creed, and culture to clean up, wear pink, and have fun together. It may be her name up here, but we are truly celebrating the whole community coming together in love and beauty to make this a better place to live.”
Crayton also founded Keep Macon-Bibb Beautiful 45 years ago after her volunteer work with Keep America Beautiful. She persuaded Governor George Busbee to declare Georgia the first state affiliate of Keep America Beautiful. Georgia is now the largest state affiliate in the country with 78 affiliates reaching 80% of the population.
“For over a half century, I have loved Macon. It has truly blessed and enriched my life,” said Crayton. “Thank each of you for sharing this honor with me and each time you visit this awesome park, just remember we do even small things with great love to make our world a better place.”
“Carolyn Crayton is a true icon in our community,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “She has always gone above and beyond to showcase the beauty Macon-Bibb has to offer, and that includes this amazing park which hosts the Cherry Blossom Festival, back-to-school bashes, baseball games, skating, and hundreds of family gatherings.”
