Leaving the corporate world, Trent and Erika Morgan decided to take a leap of faith and start their own business. In March 2018, the married couple opened Macon Homes & Construction.
What started as just painting jobs, carpentry, and minor repairs has grown into renovations and construction on existing buildings. The family-run business serves all of Middle Georgia but has had a lot of success in their home of Macon-Bibb County. Both Erika and Trent were born and raised in Macon and graduated from Central High School.
It has not been an easy road for the Morgans to start a black-owned business, but they say it has been worth it and are learning a lot.
“As a black business, we make a point to reach out and support other black businesses first because it has been such a challenge for us,” said Erika. “We haven’t had all of the privileges as other business owners. So we try to help our community as much as we can.”
The Morgans are part of NewTown Macon’s Downtown Diversity Initiative as well as the County’s Office of Small Business Affairs (OSBA). They say they are grateful for the business mentors they have had throughout their journey and hope to be mentors for others wanting to start their own businesses.
“It has been very exciting to see the number of African-Americans who are stepping out of the corporate environment and wanting to build generational wealth,” said Erika. “We can’t wait to continue to watch that number grow in our community.”
