The playground at Amerson River Park will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 5 and 6, so repairs can be made. Three slides will be replaced, as well as the adventure tube. The bonded rubber ground covering will also be recoated and sections around the poles will be replaced.

“With Amerson being one of our top destinations in the county and a major draw for the region, the playground is very heavily used, and we need to make some much-needed repairs,” says Michael Glisson, Parks & Beautification Director.

Should rain delay the work, the area may need to remain closed additional days. Updates will be posted to the Macon-Bibb County Facebook page.

About Amerson River Park

Amerson River Park opened in 2015 with an event attended by an estimated 3,000 people. It was created on the site of the former water works treatment plant, and with a $5.5 million federal grant, it underwent a 15-month overhaul.

It is now a 180-acre park featuring the playground, seven miles of paved and unpaved trails, multiple pavilions, boat launch and takeout, scenic overlooks, outdoor exercise equipment, and more. Several hundred thousand people visit it every year.

Plans are underway to expand the trail system to both the north and south. On the north side, Macon-Bibb has acquired more than 200 acres of pristine wooded areas along the river which can be used to grow the park. To the south, trails are already being created to connect Amerson River Park to the rest of the Ocmulgee Heritage Trail.

Once complete, there will be a trail network along the river stretching from Arkwright Road through Historic Riverside and Rose Hill Cemeteries, through Downtown, and to the Ocmulgee Mounds National Historical Park. It will also connect neighborhoods along Riverside Drive to Historic Pleasant Hill to Shirley Hills to Downtown to Mill Hill East Macon Arts Village.
