On Friday, February 7, Mayor Lester Miller and the Friends of Rosa Parks Square Board held a Wreath Laying Ceremony in honor and celebration of Rosa Parks’ birthday. Parks would have been 112 years old on February 4.
The ceremony was held inside Commission Chambers, since Rosa Parks Square is undergoing construction.
“We’re honored to celebrate Rosa Parks each and every year,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “She was a trailblazer and stood up for everyone’s rights. It’s important to keep celebrating those who came before us and made a big difference.”
“Her quiet act of defiance on a Montgomery bus nearly 70 years ago was more than a moment of personal resistance, it was a spark that ignited a movement,” said Friends of Rosa Parks Square Chair Andrea Cooke. “A movement that challenged injustice, reshaped our nation and reminded the world that courage often comes in the simplest of acts.”
Rosa Parks Square, across the street from Macon City Hall, is undergoing $2.5 million in renovations. The park is expected to reopen before this summer.
