On Tuesday, October 6, the Macon Area Habitat for Humanity continued its recognition of Habitat Week with a Mortgage Burning that celebrated 10 families making final payments on their homes. These 10 families, years ago, completed the classes Habitat provides to help people become homeowners, and then they were able to move into Habitat-built houses.   

“This families have been with us for 15 years or more, working hard to be strong homeowners and being part of strengthening the neighborhood around them,” said Ivey Hall, Executive Director.  

“Habitat for Humanity is an inspiring part of our Blight Fight because they recognize – as we all do – that demolition of blight is just the first step, that we need to replace blight with new houses,” says Mayor Lester Miller. “I’m proud of their work to not just build a house, but to work directly with families to make that house a home.”  

These homeowners started their Habitat journey by dedicating their time through sweat equity to their homes and the homes of other new Habitat families. Their commitment to pay their mortgage allowed Macon Habitat to build more Habitat homes.  

 Other events celebrating homeownership during Habitat Week were World Habitat Day on Monday, a Ground Blessing for houses about to be built on Wednesday, the ReStore Sidewalk Sale on Thursday, and the Home Court Pickleball Tournament on Friday.
