In May 2019, the Georgia Department of Natural Resources Environmental Protection Division (EPD) conducted a routine inspection on Macon-Bibb County’s Walker Road Landfill. The EPD awarded a rating of 95, the highest it’s earned since October 2012.

“I’m so proud of our crews and the way they came together to earn this score, and I want to thank the help provided by crews from the Public Works Department,” says Solid Waste Interim Director Pat Raines. “Our entire Department helps in some way with keeping our county clean, whether it’s maintaining the landfill or picking up yard debris or removing illegal dumps, and they do it because they love this community.”

“Thank you to our Solid Waste crews that worked so hard to earn this very commendable score, and for working to maintain our landfill day in and day out,” says Mayor Robert Reichert. “They have to work in some extreme conditions – whether it’s in the heat or cold or having to repair it after large amounts of rain – and our community should show their appreciation for what they do.”

The report noted several areas that needed some work, including the need to fully grade the top of the landfill so water can’t become standing pool and the need to have proper documentation of prohibited waste training of all employees.
