Prior to the rescue on Thursday, April 10, Macon-Bibb County’s Animal Welfare Center was nearing capacity from its regular calls and pickups. There were 26 animals ready to be adopted and 61 waiting on their seven-day hold to be complete. There are now 34 additional animals from Thursday’s rescue in the Center.

Thursday night, Animal Welfare staff and a team from Macon Purrs n Paws worked for almost eight hours bathing the animals, getting them vaccinated and dewormed, filling out intake cards, treating for ear mites and fleas, setting up kennels, separating animals by health and pregnancy, and so much more. Macon Purrs n Paws also pulled four of the cats.

 “The outpouring of support from that animal advocacy community has been overwhelming. We continue to field dozens of calls, emails, and Facebook messages asking how people and organizations can help in this critical time,” says Interim Director Sonja Adams. “This is an incident that has struck all of his very hard, and we’re working hard to find placements and adoptions for them.”

According to Adams, the Center needs some assistance from the community as resources, space, and staff are limited and strained due to it being near capacity and having to bring in a large number of animals at one time. People are needed to adopt the ones that are ready, and people and organizations can foster and pull animals that are still in the seven-day hold. They can also volunteer at the Center with various duties to care for the animals, such as feeding, walking, and cleaning the kennels.
