The Macon-Bibb County Board of Commissioners met for its regularly scheduled Commission Meeting on Tuesday, September 15, 2020. Due to social distancing guidelines to reduce the spread of COVID-19, the meetings are still being held via Zoom. Here’s a recap of the items Commissioners voted on this week.

Commissioners approved a change to sections of the Code related to transferring Alcohol Licensing Services to the Tax Commissioner’s Office.

The Board approved moving $1,400 within the Tax Commissioner’s budget to cover the cost of a temporary employee.

Commissioners changed a section of the Code related to referral of items to Committee of the Whole.

The Board approved appointing Gregory C. Glover to the Arbor Conservation Board.

Commissioners approved naming the Engineering Building after former County Engineer Robert E. Fountain.

The Board approved putting needed streetlights in the Lake Arrowhead neighborhood, and on Riverdale Road.

Commissioners approved using Eminent Domain to acquire several blighted properties on Pursley Street to enhance the entrance to Linwood Cemetery. Click each address to learn more.

The Board approved a quitclaim deed for .02 acres of land at 1720 Dannenberg Avenue to Mercer University.

Commissioners approved changing the maximum speed limit to 35 mph on Foster Road from Tucker Road to Zebulon Road.

The Board approved a temporary Ordinance to allow people to use County Rights-of-Way for the sale of goods.

Commissioners approved spending up to $100,000 from the Landfill Closure/Levee Maintenance Fund to improve the railroad crossing on Lower Poplar Street so heavy equipment can cross it.

Commissioners approved a supplemental budget appropriation for $427,251 for the Board of Elections. They also passed a Resolution of Support for the Macon-Bibb Board of Elections to find additional satellite voting locations for early voting, the addition of Sunday voting, and more locations for voters to drop off their absentee ballots.

Commissioners approved a reimbursable agreement with the FAA to install Runway Navigational Aids at the Middle Georgia Regional Airport.

The Board approved the appropriation of $50,000 to restore and repaint the Benny A. Scott Memorial Steam Engine located at the entrance of Carolyn Crayton Park (formerly Central City Park).

Commissioners approved moving $40,000 within the Parks & Beautification Department in order to rent street sweepers.

The Board approved the Five Year Short Term Work Program and Capital Improvements Element Update.

The Commission approved using Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) funds to buy a new Ice Dasher System for the Macon Centreplex. This is for the plexiglass that goes around the rink, which prevents a puck or any other items from hitting those in the crowd.

The Board approved a contract with Warren Associates for the next phase of SPLOST-funded improvements at Freedom Park.

Commissioners approved sending a letter requesting the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and Local Legislative Delegation to take action to ensure the continued operation of the Macon Medical Examiner’s Office.
