No Net Increase Proposed, Move to Tax Equity Begins

Macon-Bibb County will hold public hearings for the Fiscal Year 2015 (July 1, 2014 – June 30, 2015) millage rate. This rate will be part of the first-ever consolidated budget, and its net effect will be no change for residents in the former unincorporated county and a decrease for residents in the former city limits.

For FY15, Macon-Bibb County is proposing a rate for the former unincorporated county of 14.652 mils (same as FY14) and a rate of 19.502 for the former city limits (a decrease of 2.201 mils). This decrease in the former city limits means residents will see a decrease of approximately $80 on a $100,000 home. The chart below shows the millage rate for FY14, what is proposed for FY15, and what we will be moving toward in FY16.

“One of the promises of consolidating our governments was that we would have equity in our property taxes, and this year, we are taking that first step by reducing taxes in the former city limits and not increasing them in the former unincorporated county,” says Macon-Bibb Mayor Robert Reichert. “Our first consolidated budget is already smaller than the two former governments combined, and we will continue to look for ways to operate and provide services more effectively and efficiently.”

Public Hearings
Commission Chambers * Macon-Bibb Government Center * 700 Poplar Street
Hearings broadcast live on www.maconbibb.tv.

Tuesday, August 12 * 9:30 a.m. & 3:00 p.m.
Tuesday, August 19 * 6:00 p.m.

Due to the way the millage rate is categorized, the advertisement that will run in the newspaper on August 5 and August 12 announces a property tax increase. This is because all property tax will be designated as general millage rate, whereas before there was a general millage rate and a special millage rate for fire protection. With it all being general millage rate, it’s classified as an increase.

However, the millage rate for the former unincorporated county is being proposed as the same as last year, and there will be a millage rate decrease for residents in the former city limits.
