The Urban Complete Count Committee is hosting Census Saturday on February 8, 2020 from 11:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Rosa Jackson Recreation Center (1211 Maynard Street) , Frank Johnson Recreation Center (2227 Mercer University Drive) , and Memorial Recreation Center (763 Long Street) .

During the events, people will learn more about what the Census means, how it will impact funding for community programs and elections, the timeline for participating, and how people can make sure they are counted.

“It is important for individuals to understand how the census affect their communities on a personal level. A decision to participate in the census could impact funding for more affordable housing, childcare, head start, and other critically needed programs in Urban Communities,” says Sheknita Davis with the Urban Complete Count Committee. “Therefore, we wanted to host events in the communities where individuals are least likely to participate and let them know their voice matters. We should all be civically engaged and accountable for the growth and development of our community.”

“We want to make sure people know how easy and important it is to participate in this year’s Census count. So many programs our neighborhoods and families rely on have funding based on the results of the Census, and it’s up to us to reach them to make sure they’re counted,” says District 8 Commissioner Virgil Watkins. “Everybody counts, and if we make sure we get everyone counted, people will know that Macon-Bibb counts.”

“It is very important that everybody participates in the 2020 Census, and since our recreation centers provide a direct connection to people in our community, we are honored to help host these information sessions,” says Recreation Director Robert Walker.

Census Saturday will be one of many events and outreach efforts held during the next few months as Complete Count Committees in multiple organizations, agencies, and communities work to reach every person in Macon-Bibb County.
