Nearly 50 students spent their winter break learning, creating, and connecting during the two-day Ugly Sweaters STEM & Stories camp hosted by Lead With Literacy and Fathers Among Men, two Macon Violence Prevention (MVP) partners, at the South Bibb Recreation Center.

The camp welcomed 48 campers ranging from 3rd through 8th grade, along with high school volunteers, for two full days of hands-on STEM challenges, reading activities, and team games. Throughout the program, students also participated in small-group workshops led by positive mentors, creating a safe space for growth, reflection, and fun during the holiday break.

One of the campers’ favorite activities was the Gingerbread House STEM Challenge, where each student created a blueprint, developed a budget for materials, and built a gingerbread house that was later tested for stability and design. The friendly competition ended with prizes and lots of proud smiles.

Another highlight was the Hot Chocolate Book Tasting, where campers explored different genres and poetry through short readings and group discussions while enjoying a hot chocolate bar complete with sweet toppings.

Mentor-led Mindset Workshops rounded out the experience, focusing on mindfulness, self-reflection, confidence, and goal setting as students prepared for the new year.

Literacy was intentionally woven into every part of the camp. From shared reading and poetry exploration to writing reflections and interpreting STEM instructions, students were encouraged to build their reading and communication skills in fun, engaging ways.

“Programs like this are important because they give kids a safe place to unplug from their devices, build real connections, and stay engaged during school breaks,” said Tamika Withers with Lead With Literacy. “These camps create space for learning, mentorship, and fun while surrounding youth with caring adults and positive peers.”

The camp was made possible through the support of community partners including Fathers Among Men, South Bibb Recreation Center, Book ‘Em, and Little Sweeties Cakery. Additional donations from Lead With Literacy supporters and the dedication of volunteer mentors helped create a meaningful experience for every camper.
