On Tuesday, October 22, the Macon Action Plan Steering Committee, Urban Development Authority (UDA), NewTown, Community Foundation of Central Georgia (CFCGA), Knight Foundation, Peyton Anderson Foundation, and Macon-Bibb County will reveal the third iteration of the Macon Action Plan (MAP), known as MAP XL. The reveal will happen at Longleaf Distillery (664 Second Street) at 5:00 p.m. This event is free and open to the public.
“Our goal is to take Downtown Macon and surrounding neighborhoods to the next level to ensure locals benefit from the coming growth to Macon,” says Urban Development Authority (UDA) and Director of Planning and Public Spaces Alex Morrison. “MAP XL expands the vision of the original Macon Action Plan and prepares us to be the gateway community for the country’s next National Park.”
MAP XL was made possible thanks to hundreds of community members who shared their input about what they wanted to see in the third version of the MAP. People shared their opinions through an online survey and during two open houses at Fall Line Brewing Co. in August 2023 and Tubman African American Museum in January.
Once MAP XL is released on Tuesday, you can view it here.
About the Macon Action Plan
The Macon Action Plan (MAP) is a comprehensive, community-driven, plan that envisions the future of Macon’s Urban Core. The Macon-Bibb County Urban Development Authority received generous grants from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and the Peyton Anderson Foundation to fund this effort to plan for our collective future. Facilitated by the Macon-Bibb Urban Development Authority, Macon-Bibb County, and their partners, MAP is our roadmap to guide change and decision making in coming years.
MAP was approved in October 2015, summarizing an 18 month-long planning process that included input from more than two thousand people. The plan – thanks to initial funding from the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation and Peyton Anderson Foundation ($1.5 million from each) and grant implementation by the Community Foundation of Central Georgia – the Downtown community has completed eighty percent of the strategies and project in the original plan. Downtown, through the success of MAP, has also attracted more than $400 million in additional public and private investment.
