Dependency Court
Dependency Referrals
A dependency referral involves a child who lacks parental care, control, or subsistence; education as required by law; or other necessary provisions for physical, mental, or emotional well-being. It may also involve a child placed for care or adoption in violation of the law, abandoned by parents or legal guardians, or without a parent, guardian, or custodian.
Court-Appointed Attorney for Dependency Cases
If you are a legal parent or guardian involved in a dependency case and wish to request court-appointed counsel, you must:
- Complete an application.
- Provide proof of income, such as pay stubs or other documentation.
The Judge will review your application and issue an order determining eligibility for a court-appointed attorney. Please note, putative fathers (those who are not legally recognized or have not been legitimized) are not parties to the case and are not entitled to an attorney.
School and Work Excuses
Excuses for school or work are provided only to legal parties in the case. Work or school excuses are only for the parties on the case and are available at the Clerks’ office.
- Foster care or relative placements: The Court cannot issue work excuses. Please contact your DFCS caseworker for assistance.
Court Date Inquiries
If you have questions about your court date, contact your DFCS case manager or the Office of the Clerk of Juvenile Court.
Building Security
The Juvenile Justice Center is a secure facility. All visitors must:
- Pass through a metal detector.

Weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited inside the building.
