Takella Gooch serves as a Fire Captain with the Macon-Bibb Fire Department, where she leads a fire crew and oversees fireground operations, all while prioritizing the safety of her team. Reflecting on what inspired her to pursue this career, Takella explained, “I was born and raised in Macon-Bibb County. I love the city of Macon, and I love the citizens of Macon-Bibb. I always wanted to find a way to do something to give back.” While she hadn’t always envisioned a career with the Macon-Bibb Fire Department, she soon realized that becoming a firefighter was the perfect way to serve her community and create something her children could be proud of—a sentiment that her son would later share.
About a year ago, Takella’s son chose to follow in her footsteps and join the Macon-Bibb Fire Department, a moment she describes as one of her proudest. She feels immense pride that he not only chose this career path but also decided to serve in Macon-Bibb, the very place that has shaped her own journey.
Takella is proud that her children can see her as a role model, just as she has always viewed Chief Brenda Thomas, Macon-Bibb’s first female Fire Chief, as her own. Takella describes Chief Thomas as a hometown hero, whom she has known since she was a little girl, and one who has exemplified leadership, dedication, and service in the fire service. Chief Thomas has been a lasting source of inspiration for Takella throughout her career.
When asked what advice she would share with her younger self, Takella said it would be to never stop dreaming, never stop pursuing, never stop being inspired, and never stop believing. These words reflect her commitment to always striving for more, both personally and professionally. Takella’s journey in the fire service is a testament to the power of resilience, passion, and the drive to give back to the community she loves. She continues to inspire not only her own children but also future generations, proving that with determination, anything is possible.
