We hope that this garden will serve as a symbol of hope and a reminder that we are all in this together,” said Myers.
The grand opening of the community garden will be a family-friendly event featuring food, music, games, and activities for all ages. Guests will have the opportunity to tour the garden, meet the volunteers and staff, and learn more about the mission and services of Grow Macon, Inc.
Grow Macon, Inc. is dedicated to bridging the economical, gender, and age gap in the community, using the valuable tool of a community garden to facilitate conversation. The organization’s mission is to end food insecurity in East Macon, decrease crime in the community, educate the next generation of gardeners/farmers, and re-establish the lost sense of community among the residents of the Eastside.
Charmiska Myers, a lifelong resident of East Macon, strongly believes that the community garden will serve as a transformative force, providing a platform for residents to come together, build relationships, and work towards a common goal. She envisions the garden not just as a source of fresh produce, but also as a catalyst for fostering a sense of community pride, purpose, and ownership. Myers firmly believes that a strong and united community is the key to reducing violence and creating a brighter future for East Macon.

About the Macon Violence Prevention Program
Macon Violence Prevention (MVP) is an evidence-based, multifaceted program created to address public safety in Macon-Bibb County. Supported and funded by the consolidated government, MVP is a community-wide effort that brings together elected officials, community leaders, agencies, organizations, and departments.
The second round of MVP grants is currently under review and will be announced soon by the Community Foundation of Central Georgia. Up to $600,000 will be awarded to organizations to continue or start programs focused on violent crime prevention. These programs and efforts are to be aligned with the goals of the community-generated MVP Strategic Plan that were set by nearly 2,000 people through forums and surveys on what our neighborhoods need.
“The solution to violent crime in our community will be found in all of us working together on the same team,” explained Mayor Lester Miller. “The fact that more than 50 organizations came to the table with good ideas and applied for MVP grants shows that the people of our community are committed to this historic effort. If we continue to work together, we will create a safer, stronger community now and for future generations.”
