Street Lighting

Facilities Management is responsible for the repair and installation of street lights in Macon-Bibb County. Street lights that are on metal poles (primarily in the downtown area), and/or the interstate belong to Facilities Management and we are in charge of repairs on these lights (approximately 4,000). If the lights are on wooden poles or metal poles (other than the former city property area) these lights are repaired by your local power company (mainly Georgia Power).

To report a street light outage on a metal pole, please contact Facilities Management at (478) 751-9260.

Request for Additional Street Lighting

On September 9, 2022, Macon-Bibb County amended the street lighting ordinance (link below). You may call Facilities Management at the number above to make a formal request for streetlighting, and we will walk you through the process.

Upon receipt of the official request in writing (street light request form), as required by the ordinance accessible with the link below, a field survey shall be conducted by Facilities Management or its designee to determine the existing lighting conditions, including the number of street lights, locations, spacing, fixtures types, poles, and any other pertinent information.

  1. An inspection may take place at night hours if deemed necessary to properly assess the area.
  2. A map shall be drawn of the area showing any existing street lights.
  3. Facilities Management or their designee shall prepare a recommendation and estimated cost of such work, including installation of lights, maintenance cost, and electricity cost.
  4. All findings, costs, and recommendations shall then be submitted via resolution to the Macon-Bibb Commission for consideration and approval of installation. The Macon-Bibb County Commission shall assess each request individually on the merits and shall be required to identify funding for any approved projects.
Roughly, the entire process may take from 3 to 6 weeks. You will receive a letter notifying you once the final decision is made.
