Pandemic
A pandemic is a disease outbreak that spans several countries and affects a large number of people. Pandemics are most likely caused by viruses which can easily spread from person to person. There’s no sure way to prevent the spread of disease during a pandemic, but in the meantime, there are steps you can take to stay healthy and prevent getting the disease.
If a Pandemic is declared:
- Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds and try not to touch your eyes, nose, or mouth
- Keep a distance of at least 6 feet between yourself and people who are not a part of your household
- Cover your mouth and nose with a mask when in public
- Clean and disinfect high-touch objects and surfaces
- Stay at home as much as possible to prevent the spread of disease
A pandemic will typically cause economic and social problems because as more people fall ill to the disease, the less working and out buying items to stimulate the economy. Here are a few ways you and your family can continue to operate somewhat normally if one of you were to contract a disease:
- Investigate and prepare for virtual coordination for school and work (telework)
- Stay as healthy as you can by getting rest, managing stress, eating right, and exercising
- Stay in touch with friends and family through virtual calling and social media
- Find local aid organizations in case you need information, support, or health services
- Utilize grocery delivery services to guarantee fresh items while at home
We are not strangers to pandemics in the United States. Between influenza, smallpox, HIV, and the most recent COVID-19, public health officials have learned to the best of their ability the proper action to prevent illness and the spread of disease.
