Mass Shooting
An Active Shooter is an individual actively engaged in killing or attempting to kill people in a confined and populated area. Active shooter incidents are often unpredictable and evolve quickly. Amid the chaos, anyone can play an integral role in mitigating the impacts of an active shooter incident.
In many cases, there is no pattern or method to the selection of victims by an active shooter, and these situations are by their very nature unpredictable and evolve quickly. Because active shooter situations are often over within 10 to 15 minutes – before law enforcement arrives on the scene – individuals must be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with an active shooter situation.
There are different ways you can prepare and even prevent a mass shooting:
- Stay Alert. Always be aware of your environment
- If you see something, say something to local authorities. That includes suspicious packages, people behaving strangely or someone using strange communication.
- Observe warning signs. Signs may include unusual or violent communications, substance abuse, expressed anger or intent to cause harm.
- Have an exit plan and areas to hide wherever you go, including work, school, and special events.
- Learn lifesaving skills such as first aid or Stop the Bleed training.
If there is an active shooter within your vicinity, quickly determine the most reasonable way to protect your own life. Make sure to remain calm during a shooting event and remember the three steps to survive: Run, Hide, Fight.

When law enforcement arrives on scene, make sure to keep hands visible and empty. Remain calm and follow instructions. Allow law enforcement to assist you out of the building; report to designated areas to provide information to officials. At the earliest convenience, share updates as you can with family and friends. Be mindful of your mental health. If needed, seek professional help for you and your family to cope with the trauma.
