Cliffview Lake beautification project begins

by | Jan 27, 2023 | Mayor, News

A major beautification project for Cliffview Lake off Antioch Road is ready to begin, thanks to the voter-approved Special Purpose Local Option Sales Tax (SPLOST) and the Public Works and Parks & Beautification Departments.

Mayor Lester Miller, Parks & Beautification Director Mike Glisson, and others held a press conference on Thursday to mark the start of the work. You can watch the conference here.

“We’re about to really open up Cliffview Lake to people and show them what a gem of a park it is,” said Glisson. “With this improvement project – and working in partnership with our other departments in the surrounding area – Cliffview Lake will be more accessible and be the centerpiece of strengthening the entire neighborhood.”

The plan was for our Public Works crews to demolish a house and surrounding structures there as the first step in the overall project, but Mayor Lester decided to give them a break and take the structure down himself. He jumped on the excavator and tore down most of it.

“We’re not just tearing down this house. We’re not just creating a park for all. We’re not just removing blight,” said Mayor Miller. “We’re strengthening a neighborhood.”

The idea is to make the area a park where people can walk, run, bike, fish, and make memories with their loved ones.

“Improving recreation was one of the areas thousands of people asked me to focus on, and I know this neighborhood has long been promised this beautiful – but hard to access – area get much-needed improvements,” said Mayor Miller.

In 2022, Commissioners approved purchasing the property and then funding the Cliffview Lake Park project. Hear more about the area in What’s Happening: District 2 here.
