The Fire Department, Mayor Lester Miller, and loved ones celebrated a man who kept our community safe for more than 40 years. On Thursday, February 23, they all gathered in the foyer at City Hall to unveil a plaque in of honor retired Captain Kenneth Michael Cox, who goes by Mike Cox.

“You were one of those idols that set the bar for us,” Fire Chief Shane Edwards told Captain Cox. “I was fortunate to go to scenes with Captain Cox, and there was always a sense of relief to know he was there. He’s one of the best.”

The plaque hangs above the door to the entry way of the Mayor’s Office. His loved ones watched with joyful tears in their eyes as Captain Cox unveiled the plaque.

“This means a lot to me,” said Captain Cox. “For 41 years, every morning I put my uniform on, I was so proud. All the years I was with the Fire Department I was blessed. I was so thankful to have good people that I worked with. This Fire Department has always been a Class One to me. They’re my family..

Captain Cox joined the Fire Department in 1974. He ranked up to Sergeant in 1982, then to Lieutenant in 2000, then Captain in 2006.

“If I had to do it all over again, I would do it. I’d still be a fireman,” said Captain Cox.
