On Thursday, November 6, the Leadership Macon class of 2025 spent a full day immersing themselves in the people, departments, and services that keep Macon-Bibb County running. “Government Day,” led and organized by Leadership Macon Advisor and Emergency Management Agency (EMA) Director Spencer Hawkins, offered the class an inside look at how collaboration across departments helps move our community forward.
The day began with remarks from Mayor Lester Miller, County Manager Dr. Keith Moffett, and Commissioner and Mayor Pro Tem Seth Clark, who shared insights into county priorities, recent accomplishments, and the continued focus on improving quality of life for all residents.
“Leadership Macon is a powerful example of how investing in people helps strengthen our entire community,” said Mayor Lester Miller. “When leaders understand how local government works, and the challenges and opportunities we face, they become stronger partners in building a safer, cleaner, and more prosperous Macon-Bibb.”
Participants also learned about emergency preparedness and disaster response through a briefing from the Emergency Management Agency.
From there, the class met with Code Enforcement Director J.T. Ricketson and Senior County Attorney Michael McNeill to walk through the blight identification and removal process. They discussed how the county works to address unsafe structures, revitalize neighborhoods, and support long-term community development.
The group then headed to Fire Headquarters, where Macon-Bibb firefighters prepared a “stationmade” lunch and Chief Shane Edwards and Deputy Chief Ron Smith spoke about their role in protecting the public. Sheriff David Davis and members of the Bibb County Sheriff’s Office also provided an overview of law enforcement operations and the county’s coordinated approach to public safety.
In the afternoon, Leadership Macon visited the newly renovated Memorial Park Recreation Center. Recreation Director Robert Walker shared how the department is expanding programs, upgrading facilities, and creating more opportunities for families to stay active and engaged.
The day concluded with a panel discussion featuring Facilities Management Director Rob Ryals, Public Works Director Tim Wilder, and the county’s Traffic Safety Manager Weston Stroud. Each leader discussed their department’s responsibilities—from maintaining buildings and roads to improving pedestrian safety—and answered questions about current and future projects. They also answered questions from the class.
Government Day offered Leadership Macon participants a comprehensive look at how Macon-Bibb County departments work together every day to serve residents. Through conversations, demonstrations, and firsthand experiences, the class left with a deeper understanding of county operations and the dedicated people behind them.
